Music Obsession: my riding songs
It’s been a while since I’ve done a music obsession post. I haven’t gotten any new music lately that I’ve obsessed over. In honor of spring and my “fallen” motorcycle, I thought I’d write a post about my favorite riding/driving tunes.
First, can we have a moment of silence for the front brakes on my Honda Nighthawk 450? [shown right & helpfully held up by our friend Rob]
*puts her head down but can’t keep from cracking up* My guy insists that he’ll get them fixed eventually but I’ve been without my bike for well over a year now. *grumpy sigh* Maybe this year will be different.
In any case, on to the TUNES (in no particular order)!

And if you’re REALLY bored, you can read my explanation for why each of these belongs in my list below:
Beastie Boys – Sabotage
I’m old enough that I remember back when this video was on MTV all the time. Yes. You’ve heard it before but MTV DID play videos. I think part of my love for this song was that video. It wasn’t even particularly wonderful, just them running around like spies or something. But I did like it and so this got a spot on my riding/driving songs list.
Cake – The Distance
I first heard this tune in 1996, I think, possibly 1995.
Yes, I am aware that I am “dating” myself. Okay, now I have to explain THAT phrase–I used it once at a NaNoWriMo meet and the college students around the table looked at me like I was crazy. It just means that by saying I heard a tune in 1995 I’m admitting that I am old enough to recall hearing music in 1995. In other words, I’M OLD. Yes, yes, chuckle all you like, chucklehead.
ANYWAY I like Cake (the dessert too). And this is my favorite Cake song.
Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out
I cheated. This one isn’t actually on my riding/driving list. It SHOULD be. But it isn’t. I heard it on the radio yesterday on my commute home and thought to myself, self, why the HELL is this not on your riding list? So now it will be once I get around to updating the list.
First heard it on the Sony Playstation 3 commercial. And then on Guitar Hero. Or it might have been the other way around. It doesn’t matter, does it? HAH
The Fratellis – Chelsea Dagger
So I’ve heard this tune gets played at footie games in the UK? At least the da da da refrain part. I’ve never been to a footie game so I wouldn’t know but the tune is definitely catchy.
Green Day – Brain Stew
Here’s another tune that “dates” me. I bought this CD when it came out. I just love the quirky lyrics.
Cowboy Mouth – Jenny Says
I lived about sixteen miles outside of metropolitan New Orleans, Louisiana for a year ages ago. This song was always on the alternative radio station (because they’re a local band). Usually it was a live version of the song (one that is much better than what I’ve got for you here). It stuck with me. Every now and again I still need a hit of “Jenny Says”.
Elbow – Grounds for Divorce
I don’t actually adore this song nearly as much as it seems (it’s popped up in a blog post and will soon be on my SirenBookStrand author profile). It’s just the only one I can think of off the top of my head when pressed for a song title. However I DO like it. A lot. I just like other tracks better.
Mesita – Crestone Funeral March
This is a find from thesixtyone.com. It was free there something like six years ago. I can’t really describe why I love it so much but I really do adore it.
The track has this really odd dissonant marching band sound starting out. It’s grating to the ears. Then it evens out into a sound that just…I don’t know, it makes me smile. Finally it softens into a soothing finale. There are no fewer than three distinct parts of this song and I love them all but I have yet to find a single person who shares my opinion lol.
Plus it has another perk–I can’t hear this song without thinking of the Lore series (the original YA version that NONE of you have read) because I had it on repeat for most of those books. I was OBSESSED.
Rage Against the Machine – Bulls on Parade
Another tune from when I was a teenager. It makes me head bang. Even if I’m on the motorcycle. Yes, I do get strange looks 😉
Santogold – Creator
THIS is actually the song I was listening to on repeat when truckers were honking at me like crazy in THIS post. I was rocking out with my bad self to this one. haha. The intro makes me do this stupid record scratching hand gesture.
Squirrel Nut Zippers – Ghost of Stephen Foster
This is a kick ass riding, driving AND cleaning song. I dance around the kitchen like a huge idiot when this is on my stereo. It was another freebie from thesixtyone.com ages ago. And if you haven’t heard their song “Hell” you need to fix that! This is from when swing came back in style in the late 90’s early 00’s. It’s so FUN!
Wolf Parade – You Are A Runner and I Am My Father’s Son
Another marching-band type tune. That’s pretty much all I have to say about it.
Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl (Subliminal Seduction Mix)
Love, love, lovvveee this mix. I can’t listen to the original without being disappointed that it’s not this sexier version. Mmm.
Benny Benassi – Who’s Your Daddy?
Another sexy tune. Literally. I can’t remember the exact trivia about it but I know it’s about pornography and either features sound clips from those or an actress did the audio. I’m too lazy to go look it up though, sorry. I know, BAD Anya!
Tomcraft – Overdose (Lady Radio Version)
A song from the Party Monster soundtrack. We watched it just because we love Seth Green. I wasn’t a fan of the movie but I was glad I got to hear this song!
The Prodigy – Voodoo People & Smack My Bitch Up
I was hugely into Prodigy back in the 90’s. These were favorites of mine so they have to be on the riding list. Unfortunately they have the tendency to make me speed.
Hooverphonic – 2 Wicky
Heard this sexy tune in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The only reason I watched that movie was because of Sarah Michelle Gellar. But like with “Overdose” in Party Monster, I’m glad I got to hear this tune because it’s definitely one of my all time favorites.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Beat The Devil’s Tattoo
I don’t have anything particularly amusing to say about this one. lol sorry!
Kid Beyond – Wandering Star
I LOVE early Portishead. And this is a cover of early Portishead. But beyond that, this is a beat boxing cover of early Portishead. I don’t know about THIS version but you can find YouTube videos of Kid Beyond doing beat box covers live where he uses a microphone, his mouth and live sampling to recreate the song’s sound. He’s really, really talented.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Down Boy
My mind is failing me at the moment. All I can think of is “sexy tune” But I said that at least once. *sigh*
Middle Class Rut – New Low
I’ve been into Middle Class Rut in the last five or so months. This is a good driving tune.
La Roux – Tigerlily
La Roux is a good example of how usually I don’t like a band’s “popular” songs. This is my favorite of La Roux (most people prefer “Bulletproof“). I love how there’s a Vincent Price-esque bit in the middle there. I’ve looked a bit but haven’t found who actually does the voice but I don’t think it’s him (would be kick ass if it was)
And so that’s my riding/driving list. What are YOUR favorite tunes to drive to?
